Happy New Year, Jack
Last New Year's Day, Courtney and I were roused from sleep by the sounds of Jack suffering a tonic-clonic seizure. He survived, barely, but the long-term prognosis was poor. During several months of thrice-daily anti-convulsant medicine, he recovered about 80% of his pre-seizure agility. He enters 2010 healthy and med-free. Go, Jack.

Slow Down, Please
Kingsford adopted my wife Courtney and me about a year ago. Her real owners had too many pets for her liking, so she split time between our back deck and another neighbor’s yard. She often slept atop our charcoal grill, which is how I chose her name. She followed me around the yard like a dog. Courtney and I bought a house about a mile away and planned to take Kingsford with us when we move this Saturday.
And now, she’s dead. The car’s driver must’ve had some important business, because he moved fast and never stopped.

Monday, July 5, 1976: Texas 8, Detroit 6. Starter Gaylord Perry collapsed in the fourth and squandered a four-run lead, but reliever Jeff Terpko entered to pitch a career high 5.2 innings of one-run ball. Texas regained the lead in the seventh thanks to a two-run single by Tom Grieve. The Rangers improved to 43-32, 3.5 games behind the Angels.
The 5th was the fireworks game; Texas spent Sunday the 4th in Chicago. I was seven years old.
